If there were a “greatest hits” of quotes by the apostle Paul, these verses would most certainly be on the playlist: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
They are frequently posted on Christian social media and church signs, and underlined in Bibles.
They were actually a part of his closing instructions to the Thessalonians. He had just taught them about Jesus’ return; he would come as a thief in the night; they should act like children of the day and of the light. And while they waited, they should adopt a certain posture and attitude: continued rejoicing, constant prayer, and ongoing gratitude.
But what about, and why? His instructions to them then continue to be instructions for us now.
The Pulse Podcast is about living abundantly wholeheartedly. It includes different kinds of content: Interviews, featured topics, or biblical studies. This episode is the later—and in-depth look at 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28.
I take us through the text, provide background, and suggest some possible applications for our lives today.

The sermon that goes along with this same section of text is called “Stabilizers for the Coming Storm” and can be accessed here.
