I like to write songs. I used to do it a lot. Now, not so much. But I’ve written some new songs and hope to record some of them before too long.
Until then, here are a few from the pop/rock world.
Better Off
This is a pop/rock song where the Icarus story is woven into a narrative about romance. I think I had the original idea for this while at the Muskoka Drive-In. From the Meraudio album Angels and Gasoline. Musicians: Matthew Ruttan, Mike Wrucke, Steve Brewster. [© Matthew Ruttan (SOCAN); written by Matthew Ruttan; produced by Mike Wrucke. Seven
This is a pop rock song from many years back about romantically pursing a girl who is super-distractable. From the Meraudio album Angels and Gasoline. Musicians: Matthew Ruttan, Jay Ruston, Tim Browne, Shon Roper, Paul Gangadeen, Andrew Lamarche. [© Matthew Ruttan (SOCAN); written by Matthew Ruttan; produced by Jay Ruston. The recording of this song was sponsored in part by a grant from the Ontario Arts Council.]
Shooting Star
A song in the pop rock genre likening a person to a shooting star. From the Meraudio album Angels and Gasoline. Musicians: Matthew Ruttan, Mike Wrucke, Steve Brewster, Natalie Hemby (harmonies), Jimmy Carter. [© Matthew Ruttan (SOCAN); written by Matthew Ruttan; produced by Mike Wrucke.]
Adrenaline
The word “adrenaline” is used here as a synonym of ‘Holy Spirit’ as a gift from God upon the occasion of trust in Jesus. Musicians: Matthew Ruttan, Mike Wrucke. [© Matthew Ruttan (SOCAN); written by Matthew Ruttan; demo produced by Mike Wrucke.]
The Joke’s On You
This song is a strange blend of things, but one of my favourites. Almost Johnny Cash meets Stone Temple Pilots. The line in the chorus is: “The joke’s on you if you can’t let go.” Musicians: Matthew Ruttan, Mike Wrucke. [© Matthew Ruttan (SOCAN); written by Matthew Ruttan; demo produced by Mike Wrucke.]
The New Caffeine
I remember starting to write the lyrics to this while living in Toronto working as an office manager for PCL Constructors. I was doing various jobs to make ends meet while working the music scene. From the Meraudio album Angels and Gasoline. Musicians: Matthew Ruttan, Mike Wrucke, Steve Brewster, Jimmy Carter. [© Matthew Ruttan (SOCAN); written by Matthew Ruttan; produced by Mike Wrucke. Published by Sony/ATV Tree Music Publishing.]
Gather As The Wounded Saviour
In November 2020, I recorded these words to Beethoven’s Hymn to Joy. The sound isn’t fantastic, but it was fun to put together with some video graphics.
