Murder, Manslaughter, War, Hunting, Abortion, Suicide, Euthanasia—and Anger

Our society seems infatuated with death—or perhaps scared to death of it. True crime is the most popular podcast category. Almost every show features so much death and murder that we can become numb to it.

The darkness seems to be expanding. Recently, A.I. chatbots have counselled young people to kill either themselves or their parents.

This sermon explores the sixth command, “You shall not murder,” alongside Jesus’ instruction in Matthew 5:21-26.

Not murdering people seems common sense. But what about situations where death is accidental? Does the command apply to animals? What about war or the womb? Can we take our own lives?

This message will be challenging for some people. But it is also an invitation: As followers of Christ, how do we form our opinions about how to live? Richard Mouw writes: “God created all human beings. Even the shattered and broken ones are still his original works of art.”
