It’s one of the Bible’s most famous stories alongside Noah and the Ark, David and Goliath, and Jesus turning water into wine—Daniel in the Lion’s Den.
But when we are so familiar with a story, we risk not hearing it at all. Since we think we already know what it’s about, we fail to study it more deeply, and possibly miss out on what God may be saying to us today.
Daniel was in his 80’s. He had served in a foreign court for nearly 70 years. He had lost so much. Rivals tricked the king into administering what was most likely a loyalty oath to the new superpower. No one could pray to any man or god except Darius. However, Daniel refused to change. As a result, he was thrown into a den of lions (literally a “pit”).
This sermon is an invitation to explore Daniel and the Lion’s Den as if for the first time. It unpacks Daniel 6, the brutality of the ancient world, and uncovers what actually happened and why.
True bravery is kneeling before God while facing the lions, both then and now.
