Be the [counter-cultural] change [Sermon]

Have you heard it? “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

I’m not sure who said it first. And don’t get me wrong; there are a lot of things I really like about that statement—namely, that you shouldn’t just sit around and wait for someone else to advocate for change. If you really want it, you should start by looking within and taking the first step yourself.

But what kind of change are we talking about, especially in the footsteps of Jesus?

In this sermon from June 14th, 2020 I explored one of Jesus’ most famous teachings in Matthew 5:1-12 as we looked for an answer. It’s a section of teaching called The Beatitudes.

Jesus offers a counter-cultural vision based on those who he identifies as “blessed” in the kingdom of heaven.

There is a 1-page (optional) handout that goes along with the sermon so that you can follow along and engage more deeply with the text. Here it is in pdf form: Beatitudes sermon notes
