People of the Word are People of Their Word—In These 3 Ways

You can’t see spoken words. They are invisible. But like a small rudder controlling an entire ship, or a spark that sets ablaze a whole forest, they have ferocious power.

Followers of Christ are a “people of the Word.” As such they are called to be people of their word. Yes, this is about keeping promises, but it is also about more than that. It is about truth-telling no matter what, and being, according to Dietrich Bonhoeffer, “a light even in [our] words.”

This sermon continues a series on the 10 Commandments called “The Royal Family Code.” It unpacks commandment nine: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.” It also looks at Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:33-37 and James 3:1-12.

Three simple and specific ideas are shared about how followers of Christ can be a people of their word. This is applicable to everyone, no matter their age or stage.

Words have real power—for good or bad. Let’s use them for the glory of our God of truth.

Thanks for your direction, I find it helpful when trying to apply Scripture to my life. The takeaway, I would like to implement in daily living, is to be deliberate and careful in speech. I want to be able to express myself with clarity and not be duplicitous. I appreciate your studies, your presentation motivates me to become a better follower of Christ.
